Preserving Our Forests: The Urgent Need for Action on International Forest Day

Today, March 21st, is International Forest Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of forests and the need to protect them. Forests are a vital part of our planet’s ecosystem, providing clean air, clean water, and habitat for countless species. Unfortunately, forests are under threat from a variety of factors, including deforestation, climate change, and industrialization. In this blog post, we will discuss the situation of forests in the state of Gujarat, India, and what actions are needed to protect them.

The state of Gujarat has seen a significant decrease in tree cover over the past decade. According to the forest department report, the tree cover has decreased by 34.32% in the last ten years, which is a concerning trend. This decrease can be attributed to factors such as urbanization, population growth, and the development process. At present, Gujarat ranks sixth in the country in terms of tree cover, with a current tree cover of 5489 sq. km. For the first time in the last 20 years, the tree cover in Gujarat has fallen below three percent. The best situation was in 2003, when the tree cover was 10583 sq km (5.40%).

On the other hand, the forest cover (forest area) has increased by 1.86% in the last 10 years in the state. This is a positive development, and it shows that efforts to protect forests in the state have been successful. However, more needs to be done to ensure that the trend continues.

To protect forests in Gujarat and around the world, action is needed at both the individual and policy levels. At the individual level, people can make conscious choices to reduce their impact on the environment. Simple steps like reducing paper usage, recycling, and choosing sustainable products can all contribute to protecting forests. Planting trees and supporting reforestation efforts is also a meaningful way to help.

At the policy level, governments must take action to protect forests. This includes implementing and enforcing laws that prohibit deforestation, promoting sustainable development, and investing in conservation efforts. In Gujarat, there have been concerns raised about the allocation of forest lands to industries. While economic growth is important, it should not come at the expense of the environment. The government must balance economic development with environmental protection and ensure that forest lands are not given away indiscriminately.

On this International Forest Day, let us reflect on the importance of forests and commit to taking action to protect them. We must work together to protect the planet’s forests for future generations.
