The Importance of Mother Tongue Education: A Perspective by RSS Chief Mohanaji Bhagavat

RSS chief Mohanaji Bhagavat recently highlighted the significance of mother tongue education. According to him and many educationists worldwide, a child’s intelligence develops better when they study in their mother tongue, as opposed to a foreign language.

Finland, known for its top-notch education system, attracts 5 to 7 lakh international students every year. The country’s vast land and low population allow it to accommodate students from various nations. In Finland, students are educated in their mother tongue up to the tenth standard. Foreign students are also required to learn in the Finnish language up to the same level. The reason behind this approach is the belief that intelligence develops best through one’s native language.

Mohanaji Bhagavat said that leaving one’s mother tongue to study English as a career move is misguided. In fact, 80% of successful and well-placed Indian toppers studied in their mother tongue during middle school. A child who learns in their native language is more likely to maintain a strong connection to their culture and community as they grow up. This connection is not guaranteed for those who study a foreign language.

English medium education is particularly popular in countries once ruled by the British. However, in developed countries like France, Russia, China, and Israel, higher education is primarily conducted in their respective mother tongues. America, another developed country, acknowledges that its English differs from England’s.

Interestingly, England currently seeks an Indian leader to run their country. This indicates that the English language’s prominence mainly exists in countries that were once British colonies.

In conclusion, Mohanaji Bhagavat emphasizes the importance of mother tongue education for better cognitive development and cultural connection. As seen in countries like Finland, a focus on native language education can lead to a robust and successful education system.
